Basic strategy is a table of roughly 250 decisions: every player total against every dealer upcard, with separate answers for hard hands, soft hands and pairs. Reading the chart is easy. Recalling the right cell in two seconds, at a table, with people waiting, is the part that takes work.
This drill deals one hand at a time and asks for a decision. Every answer is graded against a rule-accurate engine rather than a lookup table, so the feedback reflects your exact rule set — deck count and whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17 both change some answers.
Hands you get wrong are pushed back into the queue and shown again, so time is spent on the cells you actually miss rather than the ones you already know. Most players find their weak spots cluster in a handful of places: stiff totals against a dealer 2 or 3, soft doubles, and knowing which pairs to split against which upcards.
A few decisions account for most errors, and they are not random. Stiff totals against a dealer 2 or 3 catch people out because a low upcard feels weak — but a 2 is much stronger for the dealer than a 5 or 6, and 12 against a 2 or 3 is a hit, not a stand.
Soft hands are the second cluster. A hand containing an ace counted as eleven cannot bust on one card, so it should be played far more aggressively than its total suggests. Soft 17 is never a standing hand.
Pairs are the third. Splitting eights against a ten feels wrong and is correct; splitting tens against anything feels clever and is not. Both are in the drill, and both come back until they stop being surprising.
If you are starting from nothing, learn the hard totals first. They come up most often and they carry most of the cost of playing badly. Soft hands are next, then pairs.
A useful checkpoint: you know basic strategy when you can answer without picturing the chart. Until then you are reading, not recalling, and under real table pressure reading tends to fail.
