You have 16. Dealer shows a 10.
Hit.
Surrender if the table allows it.
This is what Count21 tells you, on every hand, until you no longer need it.
The hands everyone plays wrong
Most of the house edge isn’t the rules. It’s these.
Casino studies put the average player’s mistakes at about one hand in eight. Those mistakes more than double the edge the house already has. (Zender, 2009)
The math on all five- 1
16 against a 10
The argument never ends because it’s almost a tie: hitting and standing are both worth about -0.540. If the table offers surrender, take it; it beats both.

EV of hitting
- 2
Soft 17 against a 6
It looks made. It isn’t. Doubling is worth about a quarter of your bet more than standing: one of the largest gaps in basic strategy.

Eights against a 10
Splitting feels like putting more money on a bad hand. A hard 16 is the worst hand in the game; two hands starting on 8 are better, even here.

Sit down here first.
Six decks, dealer hits soft 17, double after split. Hints on if you want them, off when you don’t.
How it works
Sit at a real shoe.
Six decks, dealer hits soft 17, double after split. Change any of it to match the table you’re going to.
Get corrected the moment you misplay.
Every decision is graded against basic strategy for your rules, and a miss shows the expected value you gave up. Not a chart somebody copied from a blog.
Keep going until you don’t need the hint.
Within a session, the hands you get wrong come back until you don’t.

Questions
What is Count21?
Count21 is an interactive blackjack trainer. It deals real hands, grades every decision against the computed expected value for your table rules, and drills the ones you get wrong. Chips are virtual: nothing is wagered and nothing is paid out.
Will it actually teach me to count cards?
Yes. Hi-Lo, KO, Hi-Opt I and II, Omega II and Zen, each with running count and true count conversion, and the Illustrious 18 deviation indices for Hi-Lo. Start with Hi-Lo; it's the one most people use at a real table.
Is card counting legal?
In the United States, yes. It's using your head. Casinos are private businesses and can ask you to stop playing or to leave, and the guides cover what that looks like and how to keep a low profile.
I've got a trip in two weeks. Where do I start?
Basic strategy first, until the chart is automatic; that alone removes most of the edge you are giving away. Then the Hi-Lo running count. Then true count. Two weeks of twenty minutes a day is enough for the first two.
Do I need an account to read the guides?
No. Every guide is open: rules, strategy, counting, deviations, table selection, your first time at a table. The subscription is for the trainer.
Why does the table matter so much?
Because the rules move the edge more than most players realize. A six-deck game paying 3:2 runs about 0.64%; switch the payout to 6:5 and it is over 2%. The house-edge calculator shows your exact table.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It runs in the browser and installs as an app on iOS and Android. There is no download.
What about refunds?
Monthly plans are billed in advance and are generally non-refundable. Yearly plans get a prorated refund within 30 days. The full policy is on the refund page.
